2017 ACP Innovation Expo Course Schedule
ACP welcomes all engineers, general contractors, mechanical and sheet metal contractors on October 4th-5th to our ACP Cleveland office to see the latest innovations and new technologies our leading HVAC manufacturers have to offer. Come discuss current projects, learn how innovations will shape your next HVAC systems, and how ACP can partner with you to deliver solutions and service. Here are the details about the courses and credit:
Wednesday, October 4th, 2017
10:15 – 11:15 Upstairs Classroom – “Optimizing Indoor Environments for Occupant Comfort” (Price)
Accreditation: 1 hr. OCILB, PDH
The goal of an HVAC system is to provide the occupant comfort needed, and while a good deal of time can be spent on the system selection and design, comfort may not get the attention required to have a fully successful design. This course will review comfort from the air distribution side using ASHRAE Standard 55, and continue reviewing comfort based on the terminal unit perspective by reviewing ASHRAE research projects on reduced air flows.
[Wed 4:00] 11:30 – 12:30 Upstairs Classroom – “HVLS Fans: Energy Efficiency & Occupant Comfort” (MacroAir)
Accreditation: 1 hr. OCILB, PDH, AIA
This course provides an overview of high volume low speed (HVLS) fans and includes discussions on the indoor environmental benefits of air movement, thermal comfort, supplementing a traditional HVAC system with HVLS fans, innovations in fan design and technology, and the standards that govern fan performance.
Lunch
1:30 – 2:30 Upstairs Classroom – “Atrium Smoke Control” (SmokeGuard)
Accreditation: 1 hr. OCILB, PDH, AIA
This course will introduce the use of fire- and smoke-rated curtains as a separation system in atrium, stair and escalator designs in open floor plans. It will include a review of the building code requirements for these designs and how flexible rated curtains can be used to comply with these requirements. It will cover the use of flexible curtains to supplement smoke evacuation or to replace smoke evacuation altogether as an alternative smoke control solution. Where required by code, the use of these curtains to provide floor to floor separation of escalators and stairs not part of the main egress path will be reviewed.
2:45 – 3:45 Mobile Learning Center – “Energy Recovery: Codes, Technologies, and Design Considerations” (Greenheck)
Accreditation: 1 hr. OCILB, PDH
Energy efficiency is a subject matter that will only be more prevalent in the future. That is why we want our partnering engineers and contractors to understand energy recovery systems from every angle. This course will explain what they are, how they are used, and when to they are required on projects.
2:45 – 3:45 Upstairs Classroom – “Benefits of Air Curtains Protecting Door Openings” (PoweredAire)
Accreditation: 1 hr. OCILB, PDH, AIA
This course will go beyond the explanations of how, why, and where air curtains are beneficial to focus on more functional topics like energy savings, safety, comfort, and aesthetic properties of proper installations. It will also provide information on updated IECC code that impacts the requirements of a vestibule.
Thursday, October 5th, 2017
9:00 – 10:00 Mobile Learning Center – “Energy Efficient Fan Selections” (Greenheck)
Accreditation: 1 hr. OCILB, PDH
The Department of Energy (DOE) is demanding a change in the way the HVAC industry consumes energy. While energy recovery systems have been a step in the right direction, the DOE wants to continue this effort by regulating efficiency metrics that will impact the fan industry. This course will demonstrate approaches to help improve energy efficiency in fan systems and introduce newer technologies that reduce energy consumption.
9:00 – 10:00 Upstairs Classroom – “Gas Detection for Commercial Buildings” (Armstrong)
Accreditation: 1 hr. OCILB, PDH
This course focuses on gas detection in commercial applications by dissecting what it is, how it works, and when it is most commonly used. There are many types of gases to be monitored, sensors to do this, and outputs to control the HVAC systems in place when a threat is detected. Understanding this concept more thoroughly will help both engineers and contractors build safer buildings together.
10:15 – 11:15 Mobile Learning Center – “Life Safety Dampers” (Greenheck)
Accreditation: 1 hr. OCILB, PDH
Beyond UL Assemblies and Qualifications, this course will address the design considerations, options/accessories, installation procedures, and the testing/maintenance that is crucial for proper handling of Life Safety Dampers. Engineers and contractors will both benefit from this demonstration as it overlaps training for both disciplines.
10:15 – 11:15 Upstairs Classroom – “Stratified Air Distribution Systems: UFAD and Displacement” (Price)
Accreditation: 1 hr. OCILB, PDH
This course will demonstrate the difference between mixed air and stratified air applications, and then elaborate on how underfloor air distribution and displacement ventilation systems are applied. For both systems, the presenter will evaluate the design considerations, advantages, product selections, and installation procedures that both engineers and contractors must know for an effective system implementation.
11:30 – 12:30 Upstairs Classroom – “VFD’s: Harmonic Mitigation” (Eaton)
Accreditation: 1 hr. OCILB, PDH
Unlike passive linear loads of yesterday, modern electronic power conversion equipment introduces harmonic currents and voltages into the utility supply. These harmonics are a non-useful energy and cause distortion in the function of electrical equipment. Thus, decreasing these harmonics can be a crucial goal to control capital expenses, achieve uptime and profits, and protect electrical assets. This course will explain what harmonics are and how they can be mitigated in HVAC systems.
Lunch
1:30 – 2:30 Upstairs Classroom – “Critical Controls – Air Volume & Pressure-sensitive Applications” (Price)
Accreditation: 1 hr. OCILB, PDH
This course will focus on the HVAC system controls in critical environments like healthcare and laboratories. Both of these environments require unique pressure and airflow code compliance, which can only be achieved with the right system components such as high accuracy damper actuation, or venturi valves. Engineers and contractors should invest their time in this course to gain confidence in completing their next isolation room, operating room, compounding pharmacy, laboratory space, and more.
That is why we want our engineers and contractors to understand energy recovery systems from every angle. This course will explain what they are, how they are used, and when to they are required on projects.
2:45 – 4:15 Upstairs Classroom – “Be A Leader – How to Confront without Confrontation” (Dale Carnegie)
Accreditation: 1.5 hr. OCILB, PDH
Leadership requires confronting people when their attitude or behavior needs to change, but many of us avoid that confrontation because it is not “comfortable,” until it becomes too late and the situation irresolvable. Dale Carnegie wrote a road map for handling confrontation, without gaining offense or arousing resentment. In this workshop, you’ll learn a memory technique for remembering this road map so that you can apply it under pressure. Principles are based on Dale Carnegie’s classic, How to Win Friends & Influence People, which has stood the test of time and remains the second-best seller all-time in non-fiction.
